Carnage GT/AIG Magnet Middle School's Building Issues
What is the problem?
Several issues keep happening in our building.
1. Constant leaks have been opening up throughout the school.
A. February 2020, a parent witnessed rolling trash cans being emptied by a custodian. The water that was emptied came from the auditorium. It appears there may have been a leak in the auditorium.
B. The PTSA found in May that there was a pipe that broke in the bathroom located directly over their closet. A garbage can was placed below the leak. There was a terrible smell of sewage. There was no apparent damage on this day in May. However on July 10th upon entering the PTSA closet, there was now white stuff throughout the PTSA closet from the back of the closet door. There were dead water bugs (aka Smoky Brown Cockroaches) and an additionally behind the door there were worms and dead beatles and spiders. There was now rust on the floor beneath the filing cabinets, with a white powdery substance throughout the closet on our cabinets, the door, the floors, and more. The PTSA requested the substance be tested. The sewage smell was no longer present, but one of mold or mildew had replaced it! This leak has been repaired but some of the damage still remains!
C. An additional leak was found later in July in the janitor's closet across from the PTSA closet.
D. There is water damage on a ceiling panel located above the stairwell in the main lobby. It appears this panel has had to be replaced more than once.
2. Excess Humidity: There is lots of humidity in our school. Humidifiers are currently located throughout our school in various parts of the building including: areas where mold has been found, molded carpets have been sprayed, and the auditorium carpet currently bares a stain.
3. Mold has been found in a total of 11 classrooms. In July, 6 classrooms had mold on the carpets when the school came in to expect for mold. They removed these 6 carpets in the school and are replacing the carpets with tile. The mold has been completely removed and new furniture has been ordered for these rooms. An additional 5 classrooms were found to have mold growi
Where is the problem?
Most of the mold development has happened downstairs in the 8th grade halls, but a few 6th grade classrooms have been infected with the mold. Leaks have been found in the 8th grade ceiling, the main lobby, and the auditorium.
When did this problem start?
The very first case of mold in Carnage happened in 2015 within an exterior building structure not attached to our current buildings. Our building is over 55 years old, so with all the leaks happening this past year, the discovery of mold was found in 6 classrooms. The original date of the mold growing on the carpet in these classrooms is unknown as to the first time it appeared. Work orders can trace the initial time that the mold was identified in the building.
Why should we fix the issues?
Mold can grow rapidly within 24 hours as spores are released into the air. Since we are uncertain at this time if our entire building is mold free, especially in regards to the HVAC system, we need to have our school tested to ensure there is no more existing mold or new production of mold. This can lead to respiratory issues.
Why should I sign this Petition?
The issue with our building is a larger systematic issue that stems from the lack of funding provided by the state. 10 years ago, 5 poor counties in North Carolina sued the legislation (the Leandro report - see the slides below). The funding was not enough for them to maintain their buildings and provide good funding for our schools to provide an incredible position.
Fred J Carnage GT/AIG Middle School has achieved so many incredible academic programs and is known for winning national and state competitions. We have a remarkable staff and a remarkable amount of elective offerings that allow students to attain high school credits!

- Write a letter to a legislator: At this time we need more funding overall for all schools in North Carolina. We need to encourage Legislators to make a HUGE difference in our schools not just here, but state wide. In addition, we need to make sure we reach out to all legislators and ask for their support!
